Official 6v6 Indoor/Grass Volleyball Rules and 4v4 Sand Volleyball Rules
Overview
Each team consists of no more than 6 players on the court at one time for indoor co-ed (maximum of 4 men). Each team can consist of no more than 4 players (max of 3 men) in sand co-ed. All games will play using All-Rally Scoring Rules. There are no side-outs and the first 2 games will be played to 25 points, win by 2 or first to 27. The 3rd game will be played to a minimum of 15 points and will be determined prior to game 3 at the referee’s discretion based on time remaining. 3rd games played to 15 have a max of 17 points, games played to 21 max of 23 points, games played to 25 max of 27 points.
Game Time
Warm-ups used in that hour could shorten the 3rd game of the match. Games will begin within the first 7 minutes of each time slot. If any team is not ready at the 10 minute mark, the first game will be forfeited. At 15 minutes, all games will be forfeited.
Beginning of the Game
Each game will start with a single rock, paper, scissors match between captains. The winning captain will have one of two options, choose to serve first or choose which side they prefer to play on, (not both). Each match will consist of three games. Each game will count in the overall standings as a potential tie-breaker.
Full Team
INDOOR/GRASS
A full team consists of 6 players with a maximum of 4 men on the court (for indoor). A team can play with a minimum of 4 players (minimum of 1 female to count). If a team does not meet the minimum requirements, the first game will be forfeited 7 minutes after start time. The entire Match will be forfeited at 15 minutes after start time.
BEACH
A team consists of 4 players with a minimum of 1 female on the court for sand.
Roster
You may not play unless officially added to the roster. Rosters are locked and finalized at the start of the 2nd regular season game. A team may add up to 2 subs who play for other ZogSports Volleyball teams to complete a team of 6 (or 4) on game day. If you have 6 players (or 4 for beach), you may not add subs (the rule is in place to help teams reach minimum capacity, not add ringers). Non-rostered players will not be allowed during playoffs under any circumstances. No outside players, period.
Nets/Walls/Ceilings/Backboard
3 inches above women’s height nets will be used for Co-ed Play. If the ball hits the roof or anything hanging from the roof it is still in play if it stays on the same side. A ball hitting the roof and going over the net is side-out. If the ball makes contact with the wall after a 1st or 2nd defensive hit and the referee deems it playable, it will be a “do-over.” A ball crossing over the net and hitting the backboard is an automatic side-out. A ball hitting the backboard or any part of the basketball apparatus that the referee deems playable while playing defense, will be considered a “do-over.” A ball hitting the backboard or wall on a line drive after hitting a player on defense will result in a side-out and a point for the other team, per referee discretion. NO points can be won by the defensive team after a defensive hit that makes contact with the backboard or wall (ceiling is ok as long as it stays on the defensive team’s side). It is either a do-over or the other team’s point.
Referees
All indoor and sand games will have 1 official ZogSports referee. Grass games are monitored by a ZogSports field manager and are self-officiated. Any disputed calls will be re-played or decided by the field manager. To coordinate and run the league, our refs and/or staff will be available to help the league run as smoothly as possible. If you have questions regarding schedules, policies, rule interpretations, etc. please ask during a break in play and not while they are refereeing.
Rotations
A team may choose which position to rotate players out of the game before the game begins (if they have substitutes present), however, it must remain consistent. Exceptions:
- A team only has the minimum amount of female players – the female players must remain in the game
- Teams may run a 6-2 rotation, keeping setters in the game
Rotations are not required in beach, but the server must rotate and all subs must come in and serve through the rotation.
Serving
- A legal serve is one that crosses the net and is either touched by an opposing player or lands within the opposing team’s area of the court within the boundary lines.
- You may not attack a serve (hands above the net).
- A serve that makes contact with the net and carries over to the opponent’s side of the net is legal.
- Setting the serve is legal as long as the ball is not caught or carried.
- The width of the service area is from sideline to sideline. The depth of the service area is infinite.
Hitting
- There are no male/female hitting rules, but there can be no more than 4 men on the court at any time.
- Hits may not be lifted or carried at referee discretion. When in doubt, use a closed fist or pancake technique.
- You may follow through over the net after an attacking hit, but you may not touch the net.
- Back row spikes are only allowed if the player jumps before the 10ft line. (No 10 foot line in sand, anyone may hit at any time)
Blocking
A defensive block does not count as one of the allowable contacts. A player may reach over the net to block a ball if:
- Any portion of the ball breaks the plane of the net.
- The offensive players hits the ball with intent of attacking over the net
Setting
- “Double Hit” sets are called at referee discretion and cannot be argued.
Nets and Lines
- No part of the body may touch the net at anytime unless a ball or opponent driven into the net causes the contact. Player contact with the net in a manner not directly relating to or affecting the course of play is not a violation. Contact with hair or part of the uniform will not be considered a fault.
- No player may cross the center-line in between courts during play, or a side-out will result. This is a safety rule.
- A player’s foot may not cross the center-line under the net by more than half a shoe length. This is a safety rule.
- Out of bounds is the area outside the designated court line.
- All lines are in bounds.
- The ball can contact any number of body parts down to, and including the foot.
Sportsmanship
The idea of ZogSports is to have fun. We hope that all participants keep that in mind when becoming involved. Although the games may become intense, you still can be competitive while maintaining good sportsmanship. With this said, any behavior deemed unacceptable by staff may result in suspension and/or ejection from a game or the league. Abuse of staff will not be tolerated. ZogSports reserves the right to remove a player from a game or a league if they are considered to be bringing down the quality of the league. ZogSports will not tolerate fighting! Fighting will be an automatic ejection and removal from ZogSports without a refund.
Playoffs
Playoffs will be held for qualifying teams. The tie-breakers are:
1. Total number of points
2. Head-to-head competition
3. If team forfeited, loses tie breaker if other tiebreaker rules don’t resolve seeding
4. Record against other teams in or tied for playoffs (winning percentage – i.e., 0-1 is same as 0-2, but 1-3 is better than 0-1)
5. Number of wins
6. Record against next best common opponent
7. Coin toss
RAINOUT INFORMATION
ZogSports offers two ways to check if your game is on or rained out:1. Primary – The online schedule will be updated to list games as postponed2. Secondary – Weather Alert Hotline at (332) 213-9023 (https://play.zogsports.com/weather-alert-hotline)
We will post rainout information as soon as possible, but will not call a game too early to make sure weather doesn’t change.
FORFEIT NOTIFICATION
To forfeit, please fill out this form.
Forfeits ruin the experience for everyone. ZogSports exists to give you an opportunity to play and build community and forfeiting is a huge bummer. If your team absolutely needs to forfeit, you must let us know in advance so we can contact your opponent so that they don’t unnecessarily travel to the gym/field.
If you do not inform us of a forfeit your team could face penalties in your league’s standings. Once ZogSports is notified of your forfeit, it is final (you cannot change your mind) and the other team will be notified.
